Parts of a Forklift

Forklifts are machines designed to move heavy materials. They are made up of various essential components for their operation:

1. Mast

This is the vertical support that enables the load to be raised and lowered. It may have two to four stages (Duplex, Triplex or Quadruplex). It includes:

Forks: Support the load.

Lift cylinder: Enables vertical movement.

Tilt cylinder: Adjusts the angle of the mast and forks.

Carriage: Platform that holds the forks and load backrest.

2. Operator's Cabin

The area from which the forklift is controlled. It may be open or enclosed. Includes:

Seat: Not always present (some models are operated standing).

Steering wheel: Controls the rear wheels.

Levers:

  • Tilt: Adjusts the angle of the forks.
  • Lift: Controls the fork height.
  • Side shift: Moves the carriage horizontally.

3. Counterweight

A weight that stabilises the forklift during operation. In electric models, the battery serves as the counterweight.

4. Load Backrest

Structure that prevents the load from falling towards the operator and protects the mast.

5. Power Source

May be a battery, petrol, diesel or propane. The type of engine depends on the model.

6. Wheels

Drive wheels: Support the load and enable movement.

Steering wheels: Located at the rear and allow the forklift to manoeuvre.

7. Tyres

Depending on usage, they can be:

Solid: For indoor use and smooth surfaces.

Pneumatic: For outdoor use and uneven terrain.

Each model may vary in design and features. To choose the most suitable one, it is recommended to consult a specialist.
